February, the Gray Months, and Music Practice

February can be a tough month.

The excitement of the holidays has worn off, winter is still firmly here, and the school year stretches a long way ahead. For many students, this time of year is one of the lowest points for motivation and enthusiasm, not just for music, but for almost everything.

If practice feels a little harder right now, you’re not alone. This is very normal. The good news is that progress does not disappear just because motivation dips. Here are a few simple ways to keep music healthy and enjoyable during the long winter stretch.

1. Showing up is still a victory

Some practice days feel focused and productive. Others feel slower, distracted, or shorter than planned. Both still count.

Continuing the habit of practice matters just as much when motivation is low as when it’s high. Sitting down at the instrument, even briefly, keeps momentum alive and prevents long breaks that are harder to recover from later.

2. Revisit music you already enjoy

Practice does not always need to push the edge of a student’s ability.

Encourage your student to return to pieces, songs, or exercises they’ve enjoyed in the past. Strengthening existing repertoire, polishing familiar music, or simply playing something they like is still valuable musical work. Time on the instrument is almost always beneficial.

3. Change the routine once a week

A small dose of variety can go a long way.

For one practice session each week, try something a little different:

  • Improvise freely for a few minutes

  • Play a familiar piece in a different register or position

  • Pluck instead of bow, or bow instead of pluck

  • Try figuring out a melody by ear

  • Explore sound instead of “perfect notes”

Breaking the routine occasionally can refresh curiosity and make practice feel lighter.

A final note

For most students, February is simply a challenging season for motivation. Go easy on your child, and on yourself. Consistency matters more than perfection right now.

And if your student happens to be hitting their stride this month, that’s wonderful too. These ideas still work as ways to keep practice enjoyable and well-rounded.

As always, feel free to reach out to your instructor for personalized ideas or support. We’re happy to help keep music positive, engaging, and sustainable through every season of the year.
